Plan My Port Days

Choose the Kind of Day First

Most people plan cruise port activities backwards: they open a list of tours and pick whatever has the best photos. It works better the other way round. Decide what kind of day you want (in the water, at a table, on foot through old streets, or flying along a zip-line) and how energetic you feel, then look at what the port offers in that category. This site is organised that way, by activity type, so you can plan every port on your cruise with the same simple logic.

When you know what you want, our Port Tours pages show real bookable tours, with live prices, for U.S. homeports before and after your cruise and for Key West and Bermuda. For other regions, our sister sites Caribbean Cruise Ports, Alaska Port Excursions, Europe Port Excursions, Asia Shore Excursions and South America Shore Excursions show bookable options port by port, and Shore Activities covers the rest of the world.

What Are Shore Excursions?

A shore excursion is any organised activity in a port of call. The cruise line sells its own, timed around the ship’s schedule. Local and online operators sell others, often in smaller groups. And many travellers simply walk off the ship and explore. All three are good choices; the trick is matching the choice to the port and to your time.

Zip-lines, ATVs, hikes and rafting for travellers who want their heart rate up.

Wildlife and nature

Whale watching, rainforest walks and bird sanctuaries, best in season and with patient guides.

Rail journeys, cable cars and sightseeing flights where the view is the point.

Accessible options

Coach tours, level walks and adapted beaches for travellers with limited mobility.

The full list, with fitness levels and typical duration, is on types of shore excursions.

Then Fit It to the Clock

A port call that is “8 a.m. to 5 p.m.” does not give you nine hours ashore. Getting off, getting there, getting back and arriving before all-aboard all take time, especially at tender ports. Our guide to what to do at cruise ports matches activities to the hours you really have, and cruise port excursions on your own covers the timing rules for going independently.

Real hours ashoreGood fits

3–5A snorkel trip, a food tour, a short scenic ride

Frequently Asked Questions

What are shore excursions?

Shore excursions are organised activities in a port of call: tours, beach days, snorkel trips, food walks and more. They can be bought from the cruise line, from local or online tour companies, or skipped altogether in favour of exploring on your own.

Do I have to book cruise port activities in advance?

Not always, but popular small-group activities, beach clubs and anything with limited spaces sell out. Book ahead for those; leave flexible ports open.

Where can I book?

For U.S. homeports, Key West and Bermuda, our Port Tours pages list top-rated tours with live prices. Our sister sites cover other regions port by port: Caribbean Cruise Ports, Alaska Port Excursions, Europe Port Excursions, Asia Shore Excursions and South America Shore Excursions, plus Shore Activities for everywhere else.

Mixing Types Across a Cruise

A seven-night cruise with four ports gives you four chances to try different kinds of day. A balanced plan might pair an active morning in one port with a lazy beach in the next, a food walk in a historic town and a scenic ride or a day on the quiet ship. Variety keeps energy up and stops every port blurring into the last.
